Clackamas River Summer Steelhead
Picture
Clackamas River
Originating high in the Mt. Hood national forest it flows west to the Willamette River. The Clackamas River is an approximately 83-mile tributary of the Willamette River. As it drains an area of about 940 square miles, the Clackamas passes through mostly forested and rugged mountainous terrain in its upper reaches, and passes through agricultural and urban areas in its lower third.  The Clackamas once was considered one of the best salmon and steelhead rivers in the northwest.  However over harvest and habitat loss has taken a toll on the wild steelhead population.  Spring through early summer is when we pursue Summer Steelhead while they are still fresh from the ocean and most aggressive toward the swung fly.  These chrome bright bullets are fun acrobatic fish when hooked.  The Clackamas River is a spey casters paradise, home to some of the most beautiful classic swinging water in the state.  This River is a must fish for the spey casting enthusiast.
